Get referred for a Sleep Study
Scheduling a sleep study
In order to schedule an appointment for a sleep study or consultation with the Sleep Medicine Specialist, we must receive a referral from your Family Physician or Specialist.
Once we receive the referral form you will be contacted by our office to schedule an appointment for your sleep study. Our labs operate 7 days a week and we will make every attempt to schedule an appointment that is convenient for you. Our staff will complete an assessment form over the phone to ensure we have all the necessary information to schedule your appointment. You will also be sent an information package prior to your appointment by email or mail to further answer your questions prior to your appointment.
Medical coverage for a sleep study
As a licensed sleep laboratory, most of our services are covered by OHIP provided that you have a valid Ontario Health Card number (HCN). Please remember to bring your health card to your appointments.
Effective July 1, 2010, The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care revised the funding available to patients for sleep studies:
Each patient is allowed 1 initial diagnostic study per lifetime and 1 repeat dignostic study every 12 months.
Should you develop another sleep disorder in the time after your first sleep study, you may be eligible for another diagnostic study after 12 months
In addition to your diagnostic study, patients are eligible for a therapeutic study if deemed necessary by your sleep physician
If you are prescribed CPAP therapy, you are eligible for a repeat titration study every 2 years if clinically required
Reasons for a repeat titration study:
- Changes in body weight or structure
- Presence of snoring or gasping during sleep on PAP therapy
- Persistance of daytime sleepiness (or other significant symptoms) despite adherence to prescribed treatment
- Evidence of pressure leaks on PAP therapy, as detected by home/outpatient monitoring, that do not respond to therapy adjustments
- Changes in or development of a condition that is likely to affect control of breathing of effectiveness of PAP therapy
- Significant changes in medication that are likely to affect control of breathing or effectiveness of PAP therapy
If you do not have a valid Ontario Health Card and would like to have a sleep study you may pay privately for your sleep study (current OHIP rates apply). If you have a valid Ontario Health Care and you would like a further assessment beyond what is covered by OHIP, you also have the option to pay privately.
Once your appointment is scheduled, a private sleep study room will be reserved for you on the date of your study and a sleep technologist will be assigned to your care. It is important that you attend your appointment at the scheduled time.
In addition, we have reserved a time slot for you to meet with your sleep physician, so it is equally important that you attend this scheduled appointment.
We understand that from time to time, unavoidable situations arise that may cause you to reschedule your appointments. Please ensure that you contact us a minimum of 48 hours prior to your appointment if you need to reschedule and to avoid any charges for missed appointments. If you cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice or you do not show up for your appointment, a fee of $100 may be billed to you and you will be personally responsible for that fee.
Please contact our office for more details.
